Sake, the iconic Japanese rice wine, is very popular worldwide that you can easily buy and get yourself a dose from your local grocery store. But still, nothing beats trying sake in Japan with the authentic vibe of the country around you.

1. Nihonshu Unagidani


In Japan, you can actually purchase sake bottles from stores like 7-Eleven, but personally visiting sake bars is quite an experience. Nihonshu Unagidani is basically an izakaya restaurant catering mostly to businessmen, but some customers head here just to grab a sake drink. This sake bar has over 100 varieties of sake at reasonable prices.

2. Daimon Brewery


During the Edo era, the world’s best sake was in Osaka, and the city’s best sake breweries are a testament to this history. One of them is Daimon Brewery, founded in 1826 at the base of a mountain range. This brewery uses high-quality rice and clear water from the Ikoma and Settsu mountains to produce their sake. Choose from their various sake series.

3. Asano Nihonshuten Umeda

This sake bar is for the young and young at heart. They’re pretty new in the industry, starting only in 2014, but have made a name quickly. They specialize in junmai, a type of sake made without adding alcohol or sugar. They have over 150 sake brands and even offer a kikisake, a small set for tasting the beverage.

4. Nihonshu Takezo

This sake bar may have a few kinds of sake in their collection, at just around 30 variants, but Nihonshu Takezo is nothing short of spectacular. You can pair your sake with some tasty snacks. Aside from sake, they also serve fruit wine, beer, awamori (Okinawa alcohol), shochu (distilled beverage), and highballs.

5. Kiyotsuru Sake Brewery

Breweries are quite popular in the United S,tates and so they are in Japan. There’s also Kiyotsuru Sake Brew,ery which started in 1856. Their signature sake, the Tomita Sake, is brewed from the finest rice and fresh water from the mountain range of Abuyama. The beverage is praised for its pure, non-turbid, fragrant, and rich characteristics.

6. Nurukan Sato


At Nurukan Sato, you can choose from various sake craat different temperatures, such as the hot and lukewarm kanzake (warm sake), as well as flower and snow chills. This sake bar has several branches in Japan.

7. Yamacho Umeda

Founded in 1977, this sake bar allows you to immerse into the experience as you also get to mingle with the locals. They also have a sake standing bar for the unique authentic encounter with the beverage.

8. Shimada Shoten

Last but not least is Shimada Shoten, also a sake bar in Saka that offers an unforgettable experience. Upon entering the bar, you won’t be asked to walk straight but rather descend to a cave-like basement where your sake experience will take place. This sake was founded in 1954.
